Lorena Ochoa’s dream of once again grabbing the Rolex Player of the Year award seems to be on the verge of realization as she performed superbly well to be at the top of the leaderboard at the end of the round one at the ongoing LPGA Tour Championship presented by Rolex. Lorena Ochoa who is among the leading winners on the LPGA Tour has had a remarkable year on the course and with the kind of talent she possesses it wouldn’t be surprising that 2009 would be another of the years which will see her being crowned the best woman golf player in the world. But her journey so far has not been smooth considering that LPGA Tour is highly competitive and very demanding and the fact that veteran players like Cristie Kerr and upcoming sensations like Jiyai Shin have also been having a great year and which has only made her goal more difficult to achieve. Considering ongoing LPGA Tour Championship presented by Rolex is the last chance for every golfer to grab enough points to beat others and get one’s hands on the much coveted Rolex Player of the Year trophy the struggle is only becoming tougher with each passing hole.
Lorena Ochoa is a multiple winner of Rolex Player of the Year award and has been around for a long time to understand and handle the pressure that comes with consistently being the top level player on the tour. It was this experience and confidence which was at display at the concluding event
of the LPGA Tour 2009. Every player knows that only whosoever will perform at her best can be expected to win the tournament and the Rolex Player of the Year award too. And for coming out victorious in the end the journey starts at the first round itself and Lorena Ochoa has made sure that she is leading from the front from the very first round itself. She started off well on the course and ended the first round with a hugely impressive score of 6-under-par-66. With this score she is leading her nearest competitor Reilley Rankin by a single stroke.
Lorena Ochoa might be trailing Jiyai Shin who is the winner of Louise Suggs Rolex Rookie of the Year award on the Rolex Player of the Year race but at the 6,650yard Houstonian Golf and Country Club course so far she is miles ahead of her. She has managed to be at the top thanks to her eight birdies and two bogies which has been better than every other woman golfer taking part in the LPGA Tour Championship presented by Rolex. Jiyai Shin on the other hand had an average outing as she could only manage 2-under-par-70 and is presently placed outside the top ten at tied twelfth. Among the three contenders for the Rolex Player of the Year award Cristie Kerr had the worst round of all as she ended the first round at a lowly placed tied 26th position. The good thing is that she is still expected to make the cut and the battle for the prestigious Rolex Player of the Year award is still a three way race with Lorena Ochoa being the one who is most comfortably placed.
