The Rolex Yachtsman and Yachtswoman of the Year Award, marks the end of each year by honoring the most remarkable, competitive achievement of a man or a woman on-the-water during a calendar year. The winners are awarded with specially engraved Rolex timepieces as recognition of their achievements. This year the ceremony is scheduled to be held at the New York Yacht Club in Manhattan on February 26. Anna Tunnicliffe has been named US Sailing’s 2009 Rolex Yachtswoman of the Year while Bora Gulari has been named US Sailing’s 2009 Rolex Yachtsman of the Year. Anna Tunnicliffe was thrilled upon hearing the news as she stated that beginning the year with the award was amazing.

Anna Tunnicliffe has become the fifth woman in the 48 year history of the award to secure a win two years in a row. She is the first woman in 27 years to have achieved the feat of winning the award for two consecutive years, others in her league have been: Jan O’Malley, who won the award in 1969 and 1970; Jane Pegel, who won the award in 1971 and 1972; Sally Lindsay Honey, who won the award in 1973 and 1974; and Betsy Alison, who won the award in 1981 and 1982. Anna Tunnicliffe went on to thank her crew for her achievements, which includes Molly Vandemoer, Debbie Capozzi, Liz Bower and Alice Manard. She also expressed her delight by stating that she felt honored, lucky and fortunate to have won the Rolex Yachtswoman of the Year award again.

Anna Tunnicliffe has proven her talent as well as versatility in not only the singlehanded dinghy but also in fleet and match racing competitions. Anna Tunnicliffe was the winner of the Laser Radial Olympic Gold Medal at the 2008 Games in China. She again displayed her skill and excellence in the Laser Radial fleet competition during the 2009 ISAF Sailing World Cup series. Anna Tunnicliffe won gold in the US SAILING’s Rolex Miami OCR regatta as well as the Semaine Olympique Francaise which was held in France. She then went on to win a bronze at the Kieler Woche which was held in Germany. The list of achievements continued for the talented sailor as she grabbed a win in the Laser Radial Women’s North American Championship held in Florida and later finished third in Japan at the Laser Radial World Championship.

The year 2009 was also witness to Anna Tunnicliffe’s success in the match racing circuit. Her list of achievements includes a win at the Detroit Cup in Ultimate 20s, second position at the U.S. Women’s Match Racing Championship in St. Thomas, a bronze at the ISAF Nations Cup Grand Final in Brazil and again a win at the Rolex International Women’s Keelboat Championship. Anna Tunnicliffe’s success in the year 2009 had already won her the 2009 ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year award for accomplishments during the qualifying period from September, 2008 to August, 2009. Anna Tunnicliffe expressed her joy of winning by stating that she was happy to be able to sail for a living.
